Indeed, the Jewish varieties of Moroccan Arabic are diverse, with each word having numerous variants, both spoken and written. So, in order to bring together the different regional forms, it was decided to group them under the reference forms of the standard dialect, even though these forms are only rarely attested in Jewish dialects.

Given the phonetic and phonological specificities of these dialects, certain research reflexes will need to be acquired. First of all, Judeo-Moroccan dialects have most often amalgamated the sounds /š/ (ש) and /s/ (ס), reduced to /s/ (ס). The realization of so-called “emphatic” consonants is often weak. These are then sometimes amalgamated with their non-emphatic forms in actual pronunciation. Thus, /s/ (ס) and /ṣ/ (צ) are often spelled with ס, or /d/ (ד) and /ḍ/ (צ̇) with ד.

A few examples:

the verb “to see”, in Judeo-Moroccan sāf, is most often found spelled סאף̇ in texts in Hebrew script. Yet the /s/ in sāf is derived from an etymological /š/ (sh), as proposed by standard Moroccan Arabic šāf. So it’s to “שאף” (šāf) that we’ll have to look in the dictionary.

The adjective “skinny” is often spelled דעיף̇ in Judeo-Moroccan. Yet the /d/ sound of this word is “emphatic” in standard Moroccan /ḍ/. It will therefore be found at צ̇עיף̇ in the dictionary.

Dictionary users will have to get used to testing several formulas in their searches. He will therefore have to alternate between chuintant and sibilant (ס, ש, ז, צ, ג̣), emphatic and non-emphatic consonants (ד-צ̇, ס-צ, ת-ט) as well as voiced and voiceless (ד-ת, ס-ז, ט-צ̇). However, in order to reduce these difficulties inherent in the composite nature of the dialect and its non-standardized notations, a number of rejected forms have been added for each lexical item. These should automatically redirect the user to the desired term. Below is a table of the various notations and realizations to be aware of.

So we must bear in mind that a word spelled with ס in a text may be classified as צ in the dictionary, or even ש depending on its etymology.

Help Table

Hebrew script

Latin script

Pronunciation

Arabic script

א

ā, ǟ, a, ä, ă ˀ

/a/ as in hard, ultra short /ă/, normal /a/ or long /ā/, may lean towards a vowel close to that of bad or even bed, transcribed as /ä/ or long /ǟ/, more rarely, the grapheme א marks a glottal stop /ˀ/.
